On Sunday we had an amazing individual out at the Bondurant Racing School. Sam Schmidt, former IRL racecar driver that was left a quadriplegic by an accident in 2000, came out with his Semi-Autonomous Motorcar (SAM) customized Corvette C7 stingray developed by Arrow Electronics. Sam operates the car through advanced electronics. Head movements guide the steering while throttle and brakes are managed with a blow tube.

Pat and Bob Bondurant were on hand to meet with Sam and find out about all the advancements they have made with the car, like using special sunglasses with markers instead of the hat that was originally used. Bondurant Chief Instructor and Operations Manager Mike McGovern was able to take the car out on the main track and Bob himself took it out on the autcross pad for some exercises. Sam has been able to take the car above 100 mph on the track at PIR.

Check out the photos of Sam’s visit and see the links below to learn more about his amazing story and the Arrow Electronics car and how if functions.
