Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

When we landed in Monterey, California last week, we entered an electric 10-mile radius that housed some of the most beautiful creations on 4 wheels.

Monterey Car Week was a thrilling celebration of legendary cars, innovative drivers, and the future of racing. You might walk past Steve McQueen’s old Porsche, the white Testarossa from Miami Vice, or simply take in the astonishing new Shelby GT 350.

While celebrating the most innovative and gorgeous feats in the history of auto manufacturing, the person everyone wanted to sit next to, the most coveted name in motor sports past and present, was Bob Bondurant. Throughout the week, he was honored for his racing career and contribution to the future of the sport, and along with his beautiful wife Pat, was adored during a week where pristine vehicles were flown in from every corner of the earth. .

After signing over 500 autographs, attending a gala in his honor, and taking more pictures than we know what to do with, we were just getting started on this week-long festival of legends.

The celebrations kicked off at the Gordon McCall Motorworks Revival, where a jet hangar full of classic car owners and race enthusiasts celebrated the 50th anniversary of the FIA World Championship and Bondurant’s dominating performance, where he won 7 out of the 10 races for the championship, securing the win for Shelby American.

To commemorate this historic feat, Shelby American unveiled the 50th Anniversary Daytona Coupe, which will go into production this year. Bob signed the dashboard, and celebrated his historic win for American racing legacy with Gordon McCall, classic car-obsessed Adam Corolla, the Shelby American team, and many more.

The weekend continued in similar fashion: tuxedos and turbo charged engines as far as the eye could see. On Friday, Bob joined an all-star cast of former drivers to honor Scott Pruett at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, along with Sir Jackie Stewart, Brian Redman, and Hurley Haywood.

And in case you thought this weekend was all about the parties, Bondurant’s own chief instructor Mike McGovern was busy running qualifying laps and securing a position in the main races on Saturday and Sunday at the storied Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

Saturday brought the press and major media outlets including Fox Sports and MSN Sports, who sought out Bondurant for lengthy interviews on his career and school. Bob was also part of an extended and wildly popular autograph session with the Shelby American team. On Sunday, the Bondurants arrived for the main event: the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. And as the works of art-on-wheels rolled past to the delight of the crowd, every car aficionado within a square mile made their way over to Bob and Pat.

Jay Leno, whose personal car collection is one of the most prestigious inventories in the world, quickly found Bob and Pat to take pictures and talk classic cars. Jay was followed by Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman from Fast N’ Loud, the Ford racing crew, and more and more for hours on end. As the only world champion to start his own driving school, Bob’s impact on racing has grown exponentially since his days breaking records on the track, and it was apparent that his contribution to this sport has been felt around the world.

As the black tie and ballroom gown affair was taking off, so was Mike McGovern, who wound up dominating at the famous Laguna Seca track, winning the 1966 – 1972 Trans-Am race group and the 1963 – 1966 GT Cars over 2500cc group. Mike’s commitment to greatness is solidifying our tradition of winning here at Bondurant; a tradition that began when Bob first got in the driver’s seat and is brought one step further by every successful graduate from the Bondurant School.

When you step onto the track at Bondurant, you can feel it in the air. This is where greatness is formed. Whether you’re on the track or in your hometown, we’ll show you how to accelerate with confidence. Ready to join our legacy?
