Instructor Andy Lee World-Challenge Update!

After the spectacular win in Utah, Best IT/ Bondurant race team set out to continue the momentum.  Laguna Seca is familiar territory to Andy Lee as his debut in the #20 Camaro in 2011.  Since then the #20 has made many improvements, even putting on 78lbs of rewards weight. With Harry’s new motor and a solid prep the boys were ready for World-Challege Round 5 at Madza Raceway, Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA.

The factory team’s years of experience showed as they ruled the field throughout practice.  Peter Cunningham in Acura #42 dominated the field leaving the GTS class a whole second behind him. The Crew struggled to find speed for #20 while they dealt with electrical problems in #29. Those extra pounds slowed Andy down as he pushed for 3rd only to fall just shy, ending practice in 4th. A small mistake during qualifying concluded the session with a broken sway bar end link and 5th position.
Both Camaros started the race in running order with drivers pumped and ready to close the gap between them and the podium. The standing start left a few GT cars stalled and stranded on the grid. Andy and Harry were lucky enough to avoid them as the GTS pack barreled toward turn one. At turn 5 a GT Porsche caught up to Michael Galati and Andy. He clipped Galati who tapped #20 costing Andy his alignment and a few spots. Andy regained control and for the next several laps reeled in the leaders of the pack. A podium finish wasn’t far away.

Several laps later, the GT leaders started to pass the GTS field when #20 was forced off track again by yet another GT Porsche. After taking control, a massive wreck involving Justin Bell presented a full course caution. This was a perfect opportunity to catch up with the field working toward that podium.

The restart however, offered little help as a Kia dove to the inside of turn 11 leaving #20 little room for the exit. Andy dropped a wheel and made his third appearance in the dirt. Pushing the Camaro back on track through a cloud of dust, he fell into 8th place just in front of teammate, Harry. Check out the on board footage to see the exciting last laps as Andy charges through the pack landing a solid 5th place finish! (ON BOARD FOOTAGE)

Next race is Belle Isle in Detroit with Indy Car and the Grand-Am Rolex Series.
