Bondurant Races Ahead – Keeps Pole Position in the Valley

Driving Programs Accelerate with Enhanced Leadership Team

Bob Bondurant is best known to auto racing enthusiasts around the world for his championship-racing career. He’s competed in the World GT Championship and won the Le Mans 24 Hours for Carroll Shelby. He’s raced Formula One for Ferrari and he continues to rub elbows with racing elite today. Some of Hollywood’s golden icons might even know him for teaching actor James Garner how to drive for the 1966-hit movie Grand Prix. But here in the Valley, Bondurant is better known as the owner of the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving that has trained more than 350,000 students over the years.

Building a Legacy

Throughout the past 43 years, Bondurant has created the largest, purpose-built driver training facility in North America that features a 15-turn, 1.6 mile road course, an 8-acre asphalt skills pad for advanced training and more than 200 raceprepared vehicles, sedans and openwheel cars. In 1990, Bondurant opened the School of High Performance Driving in Phoenix, Ariz., that attracts thousands of racing enthusiasts and every-day drivers each year. Situated on Firebird Raceway’s 450 acres of excitement on the Gila River Indian Community, the facility has access to three additional race tracks, a watersports lake and three skid pads. Bondurant uses his passion for racing to teach high-performance driving to students ranging from novice drivers to professionals and teenagers to stay-at-home moms who are looking for an adventure or to simply brush-up on their driving abilities. The School of High Performance Driving offers a variety of racing, performance driving and driving safety courses that are available to anyone who wants to participate. Bondurant even offers specialized courses in executive protection and military performance driving for career professionals. Typical Bondurant courses start at $249 and can top $5,999 for multiday instruction. While much of the activity at the Bondurant facility comes from its School of High Performance Driving, its handcrafted SuperKart School has been making waves for more than a decade. The Bondurant Super Kart School, which opened its doors in 1998, was originally designed to reflect the popularity of kart racing in Europe to provide the opportunity for people to experience the thrill of high speed racing. “Bob’s really built this SuperKart program to be the best of the best,” said Alan Rudolph, general manager of the Bondurant SuperKart School and five-time King of the Streets Champion. “He’s customized the track, picked top-of-the-line karts and made sure anyone who comes out to the track has a great experience.” The SuperKart facility features three outdoor tracks solely dedicated to kart racing, along with its own Bondurant fleet of Arrow shifter karts, TAG karts and Briggs & Stratton Professional Series karts. Those ages 16 and older can drive the karts at the Bondurant track regardless of their experience level.

Enhancing Leadership

Over the past year, leadership at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving has developed to a new level of expertise in an effort to improve the facility’s world-class racing programs. Bondurant married the love of his life, Patricia, who joined the Bondurant team as the track’s president. In that role, she applies her advanced business-savvy knowledge from her life-long experiences of owning several successful companies, including a television station. In addition to a new president, Bondurant also hired Darren Law as the school’s new chief operating officer. Law, who is a championship winning race car driver and former Bondurant instructor, will assist in leading the high performance driving school by developing and implementing strategic management and marketing programs. Bondurant has very high hopes for the track’s leadership advancements. “I plan to take this school to an even higher level for years to come,” said Bondurant. “This requires me to surround myself with the best.” Law’s experience behind the wheel on the track made him a top choice for the job. His knowledge of the sport and successes in both the Grand- Am Rolex Sports Car Series and the American Le Mans Series make him the right choice for this position. “Pat and I handpicked Darren from an outstanding line-up of great candidates. He’s the perfect combination of businessman and racing champion. He just flat out ‘gets it,'” added Bondurant. Law said he is excited to be coming home to the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving. “Bob has been so supportive of my racing career for so many years,” said Law. “Even though I have many more things I want to accomplish as a driver, this is a great opportunity for me to give back to the racing community.”
